Light Adjustable Lens

What Is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens is one of the latest lens technologies used in cataract surgery. It was developed to give patients a more personalized vision result and greater post-surgical flexibility.

With standard vision‑correcting intraocular lenses, the lens power must be chosen before surgery. Although today’s measurements are highly advanced, final vision results can still vary due to individual healing patterns, prior laser vision correction or subtle shifts in the lens position once it’s inside the eye.

The Light Adjustable Lens offers a unique solution. Instead of locking in the prescription ahead of time, this lens allows your surgeon to refine your vision after surgery, once your eye has healed. For patients seeking reduced dependence on glasses or contact lenses, this technology offers a more adaptable approach to cataract correction.

How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?

The Light Adjustable Lens is made from a specialized silicone material that reacts to controlled ultraviolet (UV) light. Following cataract surgery, your eye is given time to heal before any vision adjustments are made.

At scheduled postoperative visits, your surgeon applies precise UV light treatments to the lens. These treatments safely adjust the lens power by adding or reducing spherical correction, allowing your vision to be fine‑tuned as your eye stabilizes. Once the desired vision is achieved, a final UV treatment permanently locks in the lens setting.

Because the lens remains sensitive to UV light during this adjustment phase, eye protection is essential. From surgery until 24 hours after your final lock‑in treatment, you must wear specially designed UV‑blocking glasses during all waking hours. You’ll be provided with three pairs: dark, clear and clear reading glasses to shield your eyes from unintended UV exposure and protect the lens from unwanted changes.

By allowing adjustments after surgery rather than relying solely on preoperative measurements, the Light Adjustable Lens offers a more customized approach to clearer vision once your eye has healed.
